All research reviewed by HiREB requires a Local Principal Investigator (LPI). The LPI must be a staff member of, or have affiliation with, either St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, Hamilton Health Sciences, McMaster University, or Niagara Health.

Any applicant who is submitting an application as a student must have a Local Principal Investigator to act as the supervisor for the project.  This applies to all student levels:

  • Undergraduate
  • Master’s
  • PhD
  • Resident
  • Post-doctoral
  • Clinical Fellow

For example, if you are a physician completing a master’s degree, you will need a Local Principal Investigator to act as your supervisor, because you are submitting an application as a student.

It is possible that an applicant will not have an affiliation with or be a staff member of, one of our participating institutions (McMaster University, Hamilton Health Sciences, St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, or Niagara Health).  In such situations the applicant must have a Local Principal Investigator who does hold a recognized affiliation or staff position.
